Vancouver Area Smart Trek

You are cordially invited to attend the...

2003 VAST Forum

Imagine… you are getting ready for work on a Monday morning. Which route should you take?

Before your trip… cameras and sensors on the roadway are sending information to the traffic management center to display camera images and a congestion map of the region on the Internet and also sent to your local TV station. Check your stop on C-TRAN’s web page to see if your bus on time.

When you’re traveling… changing message signs on the freeway alert you to construction, accident, and speed information before you get stuck. No messages signs? Call 511 to get the current traffic and weather information on the road that you’ll be traveling on.

Welcome to the regional Advanced Traveler Information System (ATIS).

Vancouver Area Smart Trek

The Vancouver region is moving into the world of intelligent transportation systems (ITS) through the use of advanced technologies and information sharing to improve the operation and efficiency of the transportation system. Regional partners in the Vancouver Area Smart Trek initiative (or VAST) have developed a 20-year transportation system deployment plan. The projects in the plan will:

  • Reduce corridor congestion by rapidly detecting problems and a coordinated response to traffic incidents.
  • Reduce travel times, stops, and delays by adjusting traffic signals in response to changing traffic conditions across jurisdictional boundaries and roadway types.
  • Alert motorists, commercial vehicles, and transit operators of congestion by collecting, processing, and disseminating real-time information.
  • Provide real-time transit arrival and departure information to passengers allowing them to time their departure from work or home to their transit stop.

Who should attend?

This forum offers something for anyone interested in, or affected by, transportation. It is an opportunity to find out what the VAST Program is all about.

For Citizen and Community Leaders What is a traveler information system? What kind of information is important to the public?

For Public Safety Officials and Emergency Service Providers Roadway cameras, vehicle tracking, and computer aided dispatch help assess accident location, quickest route, and improve response times.

For Transportation Professionals What is happening locally to support traveler information and how other regions are addressing it.

What you will learn

  • An overview of the VAST program.
  • Current VAST projects to help travelers.
  • Successful advanced traveler information systems in the country and recipes for success.
  • Examples of traveler information in the bi-state region.

Pierre Pretorius, the keynote speaker, is a national expert on traveler information who has been involved in several traveler information projects around the country, including the AZTech™ Program in Arizona. Advanced Traveler Information Systems (ATIS) collect traffic and transit information in real-time and disseminate both real-time and static information to the traveling public primarily through the web, by phone, and broadcast media. Traveler information systems are multimodal and support all types of travelers.

Dennis Mitchell, Oregon Department of Transportation, will speak about the newly implemented Traveler Information/Incident Management project in the Barbur Blvd/I-5 Corridor in southwest Portland.

Ken Turner, Tri-Met, will speak about his agency’s experience in developing a traveler information system for the transit district. Patrons have access to the actual bus arrival and departure information for the light rail system and the bus fleet. This information is available at displays throughout the service area and in the Internet.

Representatives of the VAST partner agencies will talk about current projects and plans for our region.
